Drone wind speed resistance levels
The wind resistance of a drone varies depending on its top speed and any top speed restrictions it has. Grand speed rather than relative wind speeds are often used to limit the top speed of many unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In other words, if you have a strong tailwind, the drone’s top speed will not change. Using the GPS position, the software calculates the drone’s top speed and limits it accordingly.
A number of drones offer different modes, such as beginner and sports mode. You can also limit the speed of the drones by selecting an advanced or intermediate flying mode.
The wind resistance is often quoted in terms of a “level” by manufacturers. The Beaufort scale refers to this level. Observed weather conditions and wind speed are used to calculate the wind speed index.
In 1805, a rear admiral aboard an Irish Royal Navy ship devised the scale. In the table below, we have the Beaufort scale levels and the corresponding wind speeds in meters per second. You can use this table to see if the drone you’re considering is appropriate for the wind conditions in your location if your manufacturer provides levels.
231 mph, or 103 m/s, was the highest wind gust ever recorded. Obviously, you wouldn’t fly a drone in those situation. Even the above scale only goes up to 32 m/s, which is just roughly a third of the highest recorded gust.
You should verify your local weather forecast before purchasing a drone if you reside in a region with a lot of wind. This will give you an idea of how powerful the wind could be at any given moment. While it is possible to fly a drone in heavy winds or severe windy weather conditions, you should avoid doing so.
The DJI GO4 software tells you to land promptly if you’re flying in high gusts, and I’ve used it to do just that. You’d be foolish to follow this warning, as crashing your drone in high winds has costly repercussions.
Drone wind resistance
The common rule of thumb among drone pilots is that you should not fly your drone in any wind that exceeds two-thirds of its maximum flight speed. Because there is little to no information from the manufacturer, it is a great guide if you have no other options.
In order to receive the most accurate wind resistance data, it is best to consult the drone manufacturer specifications sheet.
Drones with the best top wind speeds and highest wind resistances are included in the table below. Both consumer-grade and professional drones are included here.
Whenever I couldn’t find the maximum wind resistance on the specifications sheet, I used two-thirds of the maximum speed as a guide. This will help you understand the interrelationships between the drones you saw earlier.
Even while you can strive to avoid flying in heavy winds, it is sometimes impossible to avoid. It could be that you need to complete a specific task. For example, you might want to check out a specific place before shooting a photo or filming a video.
High wind flying tips
An exhilarating and sometimes inevitable circumstance is flying in severe winds. If you find yourself in a position where you can’t postpone your flight, I’ll go over all of the finest high-wind flying techniques in this section.
Turn off beginner mode
You can increase your drone’s speed and responsiveness by disabling novice mode.
Drones may include a beginner mode that restricts the maximum speed of the drone while also making the drone respond to joystick motions a little more slowly.

Give extra clearance to obstacles
Keeping a drone in the air is a constant battle for the device. Don’t hand catch
When flying in strong winds, it’s best to avoid doing anything with your hands during takeoff or landing. When a drone comes in for a landing, it is typical for the pilot to capture the drone with their hands. The problem is that in heavy gusts, even the little movement of the drone could cause your fingers to be struck by the propellers.
Because of this, I strongly advise purchasing a landing pad and putting it to good use while flying in situations that are out of the ordinary. Almost any consumer-level drone can safely and securely land on a landing pad.
During takeoff and landing, keep an eye out for any loose objects.
A common occurrence during takeoff or landing is for propeller downdraft to transport some trash and light things in the surrounding vicinity.
One of the greatest methods to safeguard your drone and yourself while it’s in flight and landing is to utilize a landing pad.
Land if it starts to get unpredictable
The amazing thing about current drones is that they’ll warn you when they’re in pain. DJI range of drones for example will inform you if there are high winds and will tell you to land as soon as possible if they feel like the drone is unstable enough and could be hazardous.
If your drone urges you to land and reschedule the flight rather to risk losing thousands of dollars worth of high-definition film, you should do so.
